Tach issue on merc 305

1980 305 Mercruiser
When grey wire for tach is attached to neg side of ignition coil I get no spark. Help. Thanks

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard,... Hook it back up, 'n remove the same wire from the back of the actual tach gauge, 'n try it,...

if it starts, Replace the gauge,...
