Want to stiffen steering on a 9.9

Hi folks,

I have a 1974 Evinrude on my 12' Aluminum car topper. I find that the steering is quite loose for my liking if Im trying to change a fly while trolling the steering goes one way or the other. Is there a way that I can add a stiffener or a spring set up to hold it straighter? just need 2 hands at times for very short stints.

Any ideas??

I believe there is a friction adjustment on the swivel bracket. Should be a slitted screw with a spring under it, up near the top, on the port side.
