what re the steps to checking where the problem persist when pinpointing the no spark issue. I think its the coil or the points but not sure. is there a way to test which of the 3 components(points, coil, stator) has the malfunction.

Thanks in advance!

Here is the wiring diagram of that motor. http://www.maxrules.com/oldmercs/Wiring/1966ona/34.jpg

You have the first electronic ignition motor Mercury offered. I would verify you have battery voltage at the red wire at the switchbox and battery voltage at the white wire with the key on. The points are only trigger points and must be clean and be gapped properly. If you have the correct voltages at the switchbox you will be able to remove the wires from the switchbox that go to the distributor and connect a jumper wire to the switchbox. Remove the coil lead and connect the spark tester. Use the jumper and touch it to ground several times quickly, you should get a spark every time it is grounded. That should be a good start. The coils are pretty reliable.
