How do I remove the trim and tilt Pin from the main piston

I have a 1988 Mercury 50. It has the 3 piston, 3 wire trim and tilt. The motor is bad. I need to remove the whole trim and tilt unit, but I can't get the pin that holds the large center piston out. It has a slot in the end of it on the port side. Is there a trick to it?
