I have a 1978 mercury 800 that I bought earlier this year and the tachometer is no hooked up to anything right now. I believe I have a thunderbolt V ignition with the early style merc control. I have read posts that I need to get a harness to plug into the adapter at the front of the control. I have a question...

Is there a wire that I can just jump with to get the signal for the tach and use the bus I have for my accessories to get 12v and gnd?

If I can do this its probably just a temporary fix so I can at least tune my carbs. I have no idea what rpm I'm idling at right now and I'm worried I may be shifting at too high rpm to keep the motor from dying when I shift forward.

That will work. The brown wire is the one you want for tach signal.

If you look at the front of the MerControl, at the 3 prong plug. The tach signal will be the single horizontal slot. The verticle slots are for +12VDC and Ground.
