Took a few years but I finally did it.... Connected the battery backwards on a 1993 Johnson 40 hp twin. Tried to crank the motor a few times before realizing the mistake. Didn't see any smoke. Fixed connections and checked all fuses and none were blown. Motor cranks, but has no spark on either post of coil, but Ohm tested OK on coil. Have 12v right at regulator connections. Diode in wire harness tests OK too. My guess is power pack or regulator damage. Anyone know what is typically damaged by reverse connections on this motor? Thanks, Mark.

I would say the regulator or rectifier that does the AC / DC conversion got baked.

thanks! I was able to find coil, powerpack and regulator for $110 on ebay, so I bought them. The powerpack is about $120 new alone, so I figure its best to have all the parts on hand while working on the motor, and maybe have some spares left over.
