Mercruiser 1996 3.0 carb mixture screw

I have a 1996 Sea ray 175 that I just bought. It was running a little rough so I read somewhere if you take out the mixture screw, and can spray carburetor cleaner in there and put the screw back. I cannot get the screw to go back in. Do I need to take it apart?

Nothing magical about it, it's just threaded into the base like a bolt. You are turning it clockwise aren't you?

Yes, I am trying to start it like any other screw or bolt. It acts like it is not going in far enough to catch the threads. Could something have turned inside the hole? I haven't played with a carburetor in 20 years.

Did you push on it a little to collapse the spring?

Don, do I need to push harder on the screw to get it to start? It feels like something is blocking it.
