1980 25 hp been setting up

Hi. I have an 1980 25 hp Evinrude that has been setting up for a couple of years... What should I do first even before I attemp to start it?...I'm not sure the gas was allowed to run out of the carb before it was parked...Is it safe to blow air thru the carb to blow any old build up out?... Thanks for any advice....Pete

Pull the drain plug out of the float bowl, hook up your fuel line and pump the primer bulb and see if you get any fuel out of the bowl. Is the mtr still free and will turn over ??
