327 Vortec vs 350

Right now I am in the process of rebuilding my '83 Chevy 350 that I pulled out of my 23' cabin cruiser. I still have lots of money I need to dump in to it to get it running (2 heads, valve job, rebuild kit mainly.) My neighbor and I were talking today and he has been working for GM for close to 30 years. He told me he can get me a new 327 Vortec for $400. All I would need for this he said is to get in intake manifold. $400 is cheaper than a master rebuild kit right off the bat. I am pretty familiar with the 350s, but not the 327s. Would this be a decent swap for a larger boat such as mine? How is the price? And physically, are they the same size (would the 327 fit in my engine compartment?)

I would be suspicious about a "New" 327 as they have not been manufactured in 40+ years. In any case, check location of mounts as compared to your motor and you'll need a marine cam and carb. Your neighbor may be speaking of a 5.4 liter. I don't think that will work at all.
Bondo beat me to it... is the Chevy 5.3? Anyway - about 330 CI and modular, over head cam....

Your neighbor may work for GM, however he doesnt appear to know anything about GM engines.

your neighbor is either trying to sell you a really old engine (gen 1 327's were built from 1962 - 1969) or he is talking the new LS 5.3 liter which is NOT the same engine and there are no marinized 5.3 liters. There are Marinized 6.0 and 6.2 LS engines.

If you were to look into the new LS based Marine engines you would need a complete engine complete from spark arrestor to exhaust manifolds and coupling along with the fuel system as these are fuel injected and in some cases supercharged. Vortec is a term used by GM to describe both an engine family, as well as a generic name they have given to all engines for marketing purposes. A true vortec technically uses the vortec cylinder heads. It is a gen 1 cylinder head revised for standard cooling. GM had taken the LT1/LT4 combustion chambers and recasted a head to not need the reverse cooling. True vortec engines are 1996 to 2000 model year trucks, and 1996 to present GM industrial engines (which also include the marine engines). These heads were made for both the 305 and 350 engines, however do not interchange them. the 305 head has a smaller combustion chamber and small valves.

your existing engine is a pre 1986 Generation 1 chevrolet 350. you will need to get a pre 1986 generation 1 engine to replace it. you can replace it with a 1986 and newer engine, however you also will need a different flywheel and coupler since GM changed the crank and flywheel pattern. If you go with a true Vortec engine or vortec heads, you will need a new intake as well.

you can get your engine completely rebuilt at most machine shops for $1500. In many cases you can get good heads dirt cheep from your local salvage yard, look for a 1980-1985 GM truck.

it sounds odd that his neighbour can talk a factory new 5.3 LS longblock for 400$ , so maybe he is lucky and the talk is really about an old but unused gen I 327 what should work.

Ayuh,... If that were so, the 327 is a De-stroked 350, 'n of course will be less torquey,...

In boat motors, We usually stroke the motor the other way, 'n get 377, or 383 with a standard over-bore,...

Dealer cost for an LS longblock is about $600, so having a surplus one and selling it to an employee for $400 is about right. My last time in the local dealer, they had a 96-2000 5.7 liter longblock for $500 as a surplus. I was unemployed at the time, or I would of picked it up.
