a friend with an aluminum welded jet sled won't stay out of the rock piles so every year or two up come the floorboards and the welding repairs commence. after 20+ years of this he has decided that when he breaks it bad enough that the bilge pump won't keep up he wants to have a floating hulk to hang on to till rescue. instead of an aluminum anchor. so 2 part foam is scheduled for this weekend. but since the annual welding ritual will continue he doesn't want it adhered to the bottom. so i am looking for a simple, cheap, release agent that won't mess up the foam....like say a thin coat of 10w-30? ideas? thanks.

You could probably use the same stuff they use as a mold release agent for fiberglass hulls. They used to use polyvinyl alcohol but they might be using something different now.

Has he thought about putting some airboat polymer plastic on the bottom. It will help protect the bottom and slide over most of those rocks. Airboats use it to drive cross crountry over trees, rocks and concrete. I have it on my "experimental" project boat(airboat converted to outboard) and run over oyster shells and rocks etc.

Wont foam melt/smoke if you weld aluminium on 1 side? Maybe some heat reflective spubstance and then foam poured over that.

That airboat polimer plastic sounds good wher can you get it?

plastic sheet sounds good. polymer plastic on bottom would not help this guy much. it,s not scrapes through hull, it,s banging into rocks... 5 foot bottom through 4.5 foot slot. this repair is making the round chine square again. he likes to uses the braile method of navigation.

he is getting old and mortal... after 40 years of going where no sane person would try to go. he has decided to clean the insde up so it will adhere well in the hopes that it will slow the leak next time he holes the bottom. not if...when. but thanks for the replies.

Re: foam release agent

Airboat polymer comes in sheets and is bolted to the hull. You can get it in 3/8 inch thick. very tough stuff. You can ram into rocks etc. and it will absorb the blow and protect the hull. It is somewhat bendable and will fit on curves. You might dent the hull but I would be very surprised if you holed it. Airboat builders sell it and the bolts to hold it on. Check out some airboat sites on the web, some have pictures of boats sitting on top of large pointy rockpiles that they drove up on and then drove off. No damage.
