2002 mercury 6hp.....impellor

In the middle of trying to change my (water pump) impeller. I removed the bottom two bolts and the lower unit fell 1" to 2" and stopped.
Do I need to disconnect the shift rod or move he shifter in gear to remove the lower unit or????

Ok, put it in reverse,
tilt up,
remove plastic plug found on the lower side,
loosen bolt to loosen shift shaft (seen thru the plastic plug hole),
remove the two lower bolts,
slide the housing away from unit.
done
