Shifter hesitates coming out of gear

I have a Mercruiser Alpha One with Mercruiser 3000 shifter. The unit shifts into both forward and reverse fine but hesitates coming out of forward. (sometimes four or five seconds before actually shifting into neutral)

Does this sound like a shift cable problem?
