Tachometer differences?

Can somebody tell what the actual difference is between a tach that is intended for an outboard motor and one that is intended for an I/O? Don't both types have a selector switch on the back for differing amount of pulses?

Re: Tachometer differences?

Generally speaking, ignition triggered with a switch for number of cylinders (I/O) or stator triggered with a switch for number of poles (O/B) and runs on the stator generated AC. There are variations, of course.

What are you trying to do?

I like the tach that is for the I/O better but I have an outboard motor.

I know nothing! but it sounds like you like the square peg and want to put it in the round hole.

Why? Styling or something else? What tach are you looking at? And what O/B do you have?

Re: Tachometer differences?

Well, it's styling plus scale. My original tach goes up to 6K rpm and the 100 hp Merc has a max rpm of 5250. All the outboard tachs I see for sale go up to 7K rpm. The I/O tachs go to 6K just like my old one. I guess it won't hurt anything to have a 7K tach. I just thought I'd ask.

A lot of the major instrument makers have the same style tach in both O/B and I/O models.

Can you post a link to a 6K rpm tach for an outboard? I'm not finding any.

Re: Tachometer differences?

Do you have other gauges you're trying to match?

1988 100 hp Merc 2+2 4cyl. I'm going to replace all of the gauges. Tach, Speedo, fuel, trim, volt, temp.

Re: Tachometer differences?

I would just get a matched set. Going to a 7K tach is no biggie in my opinion. And no, I haven't looked for a 2 stroke 6K tach lately.
