Disconnecting Tilt Trim hydraulic lines

Hi All

1990 OMC Cobra with 302 Ford

I am in the process of rebuilding my transom. I have the engine out and all the drive / gimbal housing / transom mount off the boat. Basically down to the keyhole now. (surprisingly simple work)

Anyhoo... I got my transom mount out by sliding it through the keyhole with all the tilt trim lines intact. I was not sure if disconnecting the hydraulic lines would be a problem. I recall reading (cant remember where now) not to disconnect these lines unless your replacing or rebuilding the pump or rams.

Is this true?....any reason to be timid about disconnecting these lines? Anything to watch for?

Thanks
Chris

Re: Disconnecting Tilt Trim hydraulic lines

I make my living working on hydraulics so advice to never disconnecting a hydraulic line seems bizarre. But like anything on an old boat, finesse, torches, time, penetrating oil, and technique will prevent rounded and/or cross-threaded fittings.
Not all parts are available for old OMC's so extra caution is needed.
