I just scored a 1984 Beachcraft 18.5 ft with a OMC 5.0 (chevy 4 bbl) and a Stinger 800 outdrive. Everything is in mint condition with only 92 hrs.

I am thinking of going with a 350 or 383 motor but am concerned about the power limits of the outdrive. Would a 300 horse high torque motor be too much?

Stick with the 305. That Beachcraft is a little rocketship with that motor. Get a set of SmartTabs for that thing and there would be no reason to go with a 350 or bigger......and yes, your stringer drive will love you for keeping the 305.

Thanks for the info, just what I needed to hear.
Smart Tabs ?
Any prop recommendations ? I have a 15x17 and 14.5 x 19 both 3 blade, and a 14x20 4blade.
Thanks in advance
Steve

Not sure about the 4 blade prop, but I believe your outdrive is a 1.5:1 ratio. The book calls for a 15 1/2 x 21 pitch prop for your size of boat. I think the 15 x 17 would put you way past the recommended WOT RPM. I might think that the 14.5 x 19 would get you a little closer. I know it is not the book method but I like to prop my rigs to hit 4800 at WOT.

That is an incredible specimen, Steve. They were made near Salem, Oregon. They were basically a small SeaRay knockoff hull. Very quick little boats. Keep it like it is and take care of it. Even that OMC stinger will serve you well. You will appreciate it's merits over the rube goldberg nightmare that is MercCruiser.

Here's a link to some pictures of my '76 BeachCraft in progress.

Wow Steve, you really did score. That thing looks mint! Mind if I ask how much you paid for it?

This is going to hurt.........................$1500.00. Yes really, and that's with 3 props, custom cover, skis, ropes, knee board, etc.

You thief. You should be ashamed of yourself.

Just kidding of course. You could have lied about the price to make us feel better! I think i am going to be sick now.

What state are you in? I can't quite read the sticker on the boat.
