I just got a 115 johnson v4 it came with 1 harness that hooks to the starter and had black plug that plugs inside motor that runs from throttle control then another that has key harness that has a red plug that i have no idea where it plugs to.

The 1984 115 would have a engine harness with a large RED electrical plug that plugs into another large RED electrical plug that leads to the control box, ignition switch, etc.

The black plug, if you're speaking of a large black electrical plug similar to the RED electrical plug..... a control box with a long electrical harness and the black plug is on the end of that wiring harness... that would be for a much earlier model engine and it IS NOT compatible with the 1984 115 engine.

the black one run from controls back to in motor hooks to starter and a ground then the plug, but the red one runs to a ignition with keys and appears like a ground block this is what has confused me because i only seend 1 spot for plug

You CANNOT use the control box and the BLACK electrical plug wiring harness on that 1984 115hp engine!

You must have a control box that has the wuring harness with a RED electrical plug to correspond with the RED plug wiring harness on the engine.

What is the model number of that engine?

Model J115TLCRD is indeed a 1984 115hp Long Shaft Johnson outboard. It must use the instrument and engine wiring harness that incorporates the large RED electrical plug.

Sorry, I do not comprehend what you're trying to get across to me. You will need to think about what you want to ask in some manner that comes across clearly to us. (Pictures?)

If the engine wiring harness has the RED plug.... and you have a instrument wiring harness that also has a RED plug, those two plugs simply plug together.

You would need a regular heavy duty BLACK ground cable to connect to the negative side of the battery with the other end grounded to the powerhead ground stud..... and a heavy duty RED cable attached to the positive side of the battery with the other end attached to the large terminal of the starter solenoid that has two smaller RED wires attached to it, one of which incorporates a 20 amp inline fuse.

This would allow you to crank and start the engine by using the key switch.

big red plug is for the engine. If you have a small black plug with 5 terminals then that will be for the tilt/trim system. Do you have a tilt trim buttons on the throttle handle?

plugs black red.jpg

do they look like these plugs
Yellow is main engine plug
blue is the trim/tilt plug

P.s you also do need a set of battery cables which are large cables from the battery to the motor (do you have the battery leads)
