I have a 1994 Alumacraft tiller that the old owner let bang up on the docks. The sides are in pretty bad shape. I want to paint the sides only but I am not sure how or what to do.

Thomas_e102I assume that the Alumacraft tiller is made of wood. However, no matter what the basic material is made of, preparation prior to paining is essential for a good and lasting outcome. Here are some steps which you can use to accomplish a lasting and pleasing paint job:1. If the surface is very rough and weathered, take a 60 grit sand paper and sand all the loose junk off the surface, then finish sanding with a 120 grit sand paper until the surface is clean and smooth.2. If there are any surface defects to fill in, take some filler epoxy such as Marine Tex, mix according to directions, fill in all cracks, holes and crevices. Let the filler set overnight, then sand it smooth.3. Select a marine primer paint to paint the tiller and let this cure until dry, perhaps 24 to 48 hrs.4. Select a marine grade paint suitable for wet surfaces. Paint over the primer coat one coat, let dry then lightly sand with 200 grit sandpaper. Wipe clean and apply a final finish coat and let dry for at least 3 days before exposing the tiller to water.
