How to tell what year my motor and drive is by serial #'s

I have a 4.3L mercruiser that I am unsure of the year I believe it is a 2001 but would like to confirm by the serial #. Is this possible? The only info I could find said 1998 and up....

Engine serial # is : 0L615371
Drive serial # is : 0L718328

That is because year doesn't mean much. Merc makes changes by serial number range. Year has nothing to do with when it happens.
The other problem is a 2001 boat could have a 2000 engine and drive combination. They are not tied together like automotive.

Thanks for clearing that up Don. I knew that the power could be older then the boat itself, thats kinda why I wanted to figure out the year to be honest. I guess if I really wanted to know I could try to get the GM casting #'s and go from there.
