Hello I am considering buying a 1997 Mercury 2.0 150hp carbureted 2 stroke. I ran a compression test and the 4 top cylinders read 90lbs and the 2 bottom cylinders read 80lbs. Are these readings acceptable or should they be higher and if so what should they be?

Re: Compression

Hi, Hal.

:welcome:

Those are marginal, Hal. Not because of the psi but because of the spread of slightly over 10%. I would have the seller do a decarb and a new compression test. Unless you get a closer spread, pass.

You might check the serial number. I had thought the 150HPV6 motors of that year were 2.4L.

I also agree with JB, but it is likely the gauge used read low. You should see over 100PSI on all cylinders.
