removing steering cable

hi all,<br />I'm new to this forum and to the "boat world" so please bare with my question....<br /><br />I inherited my uncles boat which was left to rot on the side of his house.<br /><br />the motor is a johnsons v4 on an 1980 Infinity<br />i took a look at the steering cable and noticed that it is broken.<br />there are wires frayed and the motor does not turn.<br />you can however still turn the wheel etc.<br />i read on another post on removing the steering cable but im afraid i was not understanding what they were talkin about.<br /><br />i removed the nut that holds the cable to the motor and attempted to pull it out revealing a long stem .....<br />i didn't really know what i was doing so i left it there and came here for help.<br /><br />any help would be appreciated...<br />thanks<br /><br /><br />pix of my situation<br /><br /> http://www.geocities.com/evangelion_21/boat/boat1.jpg <br /><br />do i knock this out ...??<br /> http://www.geocities.com/evangelion_21/boat/boat5.jpg <br /><br /> http://www.geocities.com/evangelion_21/boat/boat7.jpg <br /><br />this is the pin that slides out <br /><br /> http://www.geocities.com/evangelion_21/boat/boat.jpg

dungy,<br /><br />Yes, you need to knock out the shaft you had in picture #2.

if i take out that shaft, will that cause the motor to fall off??, i kno sounds like a stupid question.... i juss don't want a big ol hunk of motor to fall on me while im knocking it out.

No, that shaft is the end of the steering cable. The engine is supported by the tube that shaft is going through.
