I am in the process of rebuilding the carb on my 1974 johnson 25hp, and noticed that the last person to rebuid/clean the carb (Me) put the float in upside down. It still ran fine. Didn't seem to have the power it used to have. What does the upside down float do to the running of the engine? Is that where I'm losing power? It would be nice if this is the solution to my problem.

If the float is set incorrectly....it will either starve....or flood....the carbs.

Set it correctly according to manufacturers recommendations. Which typically is level with the carb body.

You might do a compression test to see that the motor has even compression.
