1994 4hp johnson

Hello i just bought a 1994 johnson 4 hp outboard. It runs great but the shift lever will only shift into neutral and forward. It will not go back into the reverse position. How can i fix this? Is there a lock nut on the shifting rod that may be locked in the wrong place. thanks David

Not sure about that model, but if you are trying to do the shifting when the motor is not running, that would be normal. However if it is running & not going into reverse, possibly someone replaced the water pump impeller & did not get the shifting linkage back together right.

I had the same problem on my 10hp Mercury. It would go from neutral to forward, but not in reverse. It turned out that when I took the lower unit out to replace the water pump prop, I didn't put the shaft in the same way. It was hard to see the incision, as the shaft was heavily corroded, but eventually got it going again.
