lower unit install need help please

I just replaced my impeller,and tried to reinstall the lower unit, icant get it to go all the way on,feels like something is jamming inside, the shift lever is in fwd and so is the lower unit, had a hell of a time with the water tube but realized the sleeve was for aligning the tube, the water tube guide is rock hard,is it supposed to fit inside water pump housing?
Anyway any advice for getting this back on would be appreciated, the motor is a 1976 merc 110 9.8hp,thanks.

if you have not tried to turn the prop you are not aligning drive shaft gears up right. Put a little lube on the teeth of the drive shaft. After you align the water tube with water pump, push up on the lower unit. If it won't go, turn the prop a little at a time until you feel it slide in place. Once you get the right alignment and the bolts are up enough, you can tighten the nuts to pull the unit the rest of the way up.
