I pulled my OMC Cobra drive (1989 574AMLMED 5.8 liter) to check the shift cable drag (it was too high, of course).

In checking things out, I found that the steering pivot shaft bushing was completely worn through, and the steering pivot shaft was rattling around in the gimbal housing and the steering support bracket. The steering pivot shaft was badly worn.

I'm assuming that I'll need to make a new, oversized shaft to fit in the worn support bracket and gimbal housing. It's not a problem, I have a lathe and can easily make it.

THe question I have is -- how tight should the fit be? Is it a light press fit? A snug fit? A clearance fit so it can easily slip in?

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Carl
