Hey guys I need a little advice if anyone can help me out. Well I have a 1985 Mercury 75 HP ELPT (serial # 0A116481 model # 1075625) and my lower unit went out. I have a guy who has a 1990 Merc 75 HP ELPTO (serial # 0C259864 model # 1075412JD) with a blown power head. He said the lower unit gear case and gears are good. He wants $350 for it with out the prop. I tried to do a little research to see if his lower unit would fit with my motor but came up empty handed. My first question is, Will his lower unit work on my motor even though his motor is a 1990 year model and mine is a 1985? And is there anyway I can tell if its gonna work on mine? And secondly is $350 to much to pay for a used lower unit minus the prop? Any advice would be greatly appreciated thank you.

Re: 1985 Mercury 75 HP need some advice

Your 75hp is a 4-cyl and his '90 75hp is a 3-cyl, these models are completely different from each other and the lower units won't interchange.

Your best bet is to find a lower unit from another 4-cyl motor, any 80 or 75hp from '79 thru '86 is an exact replacement. Older-style versions from "800", "850", 85hp & 80hp models will also bolt up but are a bit different in appearance.

L/U's from a number of Inline Six models will also bolt up, but they have different gear ratios and you'll have to change your prop as well.

Note that you might find a complete parts motor on Craigslist for $350 or less, but $350 is not totally out-of-line for a nice, clean lower unit in excellent condition. Just the law of supply and demand, the good thing is there are a lot of Mercs out there!
