Upgrading bilge pump

I'm upgrading the bilge pump in my 1983 Four Winns 170 Marquise. It has the 3.0 4-cylinder 140R, serial number 6338565, with Alpha 1 stern drive. The original pump was not automatic, new one is. Currently, there is just a standard on/off switch at the helm to turn it on when needed. Do I need to change this switch when putting in the new automatic pump, or do I just have that switch remain in the on position to allow it to do its job?

Thanks!

Re: Upgrading bilge pump

Does your new pump have 3 wires? If so one wire is for the dash switch for manual operation. Other wise the pump works automatically.

Yes, you have to figure out how the current pump is wired. The switch at the helm really should be for turning the pump on when you want it (i.e. manually) and then the battery should supply the power to the pump for its automatic operation.

So, that is the 3 wires . . . 1 battery, 1 helm switch, 1 ground
