Setting a new trim sending unit correctly?

I have a '99 Larson 226 LSI, My I/O is a Volvo 5.0 Gi with the SX-m outdrive. Found a broken wire on the trim sending unit. I have successfully installed a new sender, sender and guage now working. My question is; what is a good reference point for getting the boat itself "in full trim" per the instructions I have? The boat is currently trailered. I assume a level on the floor of the boat?

. On the one I just did, the directions said to set it at 12 ohms and install it. I did that and once I hooked it up I adjusted it so the gauge showed all the way down when it was all the way down. We know it goes past level when all the way in but i wanted the gauge to represent that.
