First, thanks for the forum! Trying to absorb so much information.

Outdrive #3845109 on a '74 IO. Attempting to find the part # for the upper seal. Not having luck with part #26-32511.

The shaft is 7/8". Am I on the right track?

Yes...your vertical drive shaft is 7/8, but the "upper" of the two seals in that area does not go on that shaft, it goes on the upper drive shaft that the lower drive shaft mates into. (refer to exploded diagram for your drive). Are you sure you dont need the lower of those two seals?

Not sure, mostly confused.

The part needed is the upper seal for the lower drive shaft. Or, is there no seal there to begin with, the shafts simply mate?

Thanks for patience.

Can't quite seem to figure the exploded view.

There are 2 seals in that area. The upper of the 2, (installed from above, with the gears out) seals on the bottom end of the upper drive-shaft, and is part number 26-32511. The lower of the 2, (can be installed with the drive-shaft housing assembled) seals on the top of the lower drive-shaft and is part number 26-965031....
