Cannot find serial number on my outboard!

Hi, I have a Mercury 40hp 2 stroke 4 cylinder outboard and I am having difficulty finding the serial number on the motor! There is no plate attached to the bracket. Serial needed to find parts and manual.

I have attached a couple of pictures. Can anyone instruct me on where the serial might be stamped?

It's on the crankcase below the top carb.
