Can a late model stringer (1985) run on earmuffs? I know the older stringers had a water inlet above the prop so muffs would not work, but mine appears to have inlets on the sides like my mercruiser. There is no hose attachment like some of the older 70's stringers. When I bought the boat the guy had it running for a while on earmuffs so it must work, but i really don't want to burn up the impeller

Absolutely. Just make sure that drive is tilted all the way down when you run it. Stringer drives should not ever been run in an up or even slightly up position. It wears out the ball gears and creates stress on bearing sleeves in the upper gear housing.
