Hi,
I'm new to this forum. I have a 1985 invader boat that I recently got. when I ingage the boat in reverse it's dying each time. I have replaced plugs, wires, and fuel filter. boat is idling around 850 and running top in around 45-4700.

I am thinking it has something to do with the interrupter switch or shifter cable.... any thoughts on this.

thanks for any help possible.

Probably the shift cable. Common problem. The shift interrupt switch is working, that's why the engine dies. It's the cable binding that is engaging the switch when it shouldn't.

thanks for the response. Is this something that I can adjust to get it to run until I can afford to replace the cable?

do you know if being it reverse it would be the upper or lower cable?

thanks man!

Ayuh,... Welcome Aboard,... Odds are 99 in 100 that the Lower shift cable is junk, 'n needs changin'....

'n,... Nope, no way to bandaid it, it's gotta be changed...

Yer idle is abit high too,... should be 650/ 750 rpms at idle...

You have two shift cables. One goes from the helm control to the shift plate on or near the engine. The other one (Commonly called the lower shift cable) goes from that shift plate to drive.
This should help explain the system.
