Good Replacement Engine

I am new to boating. I just purchased a 1988 bayline 21ft. The engine doesn't turn over. I was wondering what is a good replacemnet engine. Someone told me I can get a 350 block to replace it with the old engine. I don't know if this is true or not. If so, will I need a long block or short block? Or what would be a good replacement engine? I am on a budget. Thank you

first you need to verify that the reason the engine won't turn is the engine - a seized upper gearcase in the outdrive, or a failed gimbal brg may cause the same symptom - remove the outdrive and retry turning the engine manually

then, if the engine is not useable, yes you can use a Chev 305 or 350 long block to replace it. Just get a truck 305 or 350 from a similar year (1988-1991), remove tin core plugs and replace with brass. You can also replace the original head gaskets with a composite type with stainless fire rings - e.g. FelPro (optional, but required in salt or brackish water)
If it's a truck 350 you can usually get away with the stock cam, but if auto, or unsure, install a marine camshaft.

Then, use all of you marine bolt-ons- electrical, fuel system etc.

Is there a website where I can order all that or a place where I can order the engine completed?

Thank you for the quick reply. Any shop you know of in California? The shopped I've ask have been given me different answers asking me to bring the boat in for them to look at for a fee before they can establish a price.

sounds like you going to add about $3000 to your boat "IF" the engine is no good. I would really check the engine and think about a different boat. How much can you sell it for.

Re: Good Replacement Engine

I will be testing all that pretty soon. I just wanted to know if there is any respectable and trust worthy marine specialist around California with descent price for an engine just in case the worst scenario does happen and if I do need one what would be a similar replacement. Just wanted to see if it's worth replacing or sale it. The hull of the boat and upholstery are in perfect condition.

You might want to post your question as another thread with California in the title.
