What's the best way to check stringer's to see if they are rotted. I'm going to look at at used boat this weekend and was wondering how to check them and see if they are rotted or good. The boat is a 1987 Sea Ray, it hasn't been kept in the water only on a trailer. Any info would be helpful.

Thanks

Re: Checking Stringers

Going to be kind of hard to check the stringers without a moisture meter. You would need to drill a couple of small holes. Check the floor for soft spots, if the floor is soft most likely the stringers are wet.

I doubt many sellers are going to let you drill anything. I wouldn't.

You don't say the size but if it's a trailer boat, it's likely <21', and a 25 year old bowrider. You pays your money and takes your chances.

The main thing is to see if it has always been stored bow up, plug out so it will drain; it's standing fresh water that gets boats. But no way really to tell.

I've looked at meters that will go through up to 3/4" without drilling holes, what is the normal moisture content %?
