Bell housing O-ring- glue or no glue?

Should the large rubber O-ring that is inserted into the bell housing for the outdrive to seal up against ( not the water passage O-ring) be installed with bellows adhesive or left dry? If it should be glued, is there an alternative to bellows adhesive that can be used?

Glue it, the newer manuals even recommend you glue it. If it gets pushed out of place, it's going to cost you a gimbal bearing, ujoints, and possibly more. Bellows adhesive is basically contact cement.

Thanks Don. That's good to know. Bellows cement is ridiculously expensive here - last tube I bought to do my bellows cost about $40!

Yip, its a shame that Mercruiser agents in this part of the world rip us off with stuff like this.
