Will '97 90 hp VRO work on '95 112 hp?

Can I swap a VRO system from a '97 90 hp Johnson onto a '95 Evinrude 112? This would be the complete system. I know they changed the electrical connectors on the motors in '96, so I might need to change that. Would there be any other differences? The parts catalog shows the same pump # for 90 & 115 hp motors in the same year, but they are different between these years.

The 112 is a "crossflow" block. The 90 may be a "looper" or "crossflow". If they are both crossflows, I don't see why not.

The crossflow is a 90* V-block as the looper is a 60* V. Side by side, they are easy to see the difference.

you want to add a VRO system onto a 112 motor that never had a VRO before??? the 112 didn't come with VRO. the 115 and 90s crossflow VROs show compatability up through 97.....they show that the pumps is good for 88 hp and 100 hp as well as 90 and 115( even an 85 hp in 1995). but they don't list the 112!!bob

They are both crossflows. My main concern is if there are any electrical differences other than maybe connectors. I don't have the 112 yet to compare them.

The 88 and 112 (SPL's) had Oil Injection, added by dealers for years, since the "SPL" series didn't have oil injection from the factory. It was a popular dealer option.

The 90 and 115 "crossflows" were virtually identical to the 88/112 SPL's (also crossflows) sans oil injection and "SPL" graphics and special (advertised) HP ratings. They dyno out the same.

If they are both crossflows, I see no reason not. The warning system wiring may be different, as you suspect, but I'm sure you can work around.

I've had OMC's I've run both ways. Some systems intact, some disconnected (not by me).

I have NO fear of the OMC oil injection systems as long as:

1. The warning system is intact and works.

2. The system is maintained. Water intrusion is its enemy.

We've all heard the horror stories about oil injection ruining a cylinder or two. Total BS. I want someone to explain to me how an oil injection system, that injects oil BEFORE the carburetors, can destroy ONE cylinder.

Bob, yes, I'm thinking of adding it to a pre-mix motor. I think I can swap the fuel systems and make the 90 a pre-mix and sell it. The 112 was a lower cost version of the 115, no VRO, some had no power tilt, and I believe a lower output unregulated charging system. Details varied over the years. I've run VROs for about 15 years on other motors and like them.

That's it! The SPL's were OMC's answer to Force engines. No frills-basic. Pretty much all "marketing".

No doubt about maintaining / regular testing of the alarm system. "No frills-basic" = tried and true reliable.

Thanks everybody, I'll let you know how it goes. Hope to pick up the 112 this weekend.
