i have the option of getting three different pitched props for my 1999 6hp MErc 2 stroke. I need to replace the one I have now as it is quite dinged up. does the different pitch affect speed? How do I measure the one I have on my unit?

If you read the stickys at the top of the prop forum it may help you understand prop selection better.
The size of your prop should be under the prop nut.
When selecting a prop The idea is to get a size that lets the motor operate near the top of its rpm rating at
wide open throttle with a typical load. Its best to have the rpm and speed from a test run and your boat size/weight.
We can try to work without the rpm if we have a good gps speed.Something like a Tinytach will get us the rpm and can be used on almost any motor land or sea. They have a web site.
Very basically prop size affects rpm and speed. The results depending on present size and performance.
Selecting a prop is like selecting a single gear in a car to do everything.
