I have a 1970 johnson 115 and I have replaced the ignition. But still when I turn the key off the engine keeps running. Any ideas? Thanks

Did you mis wire it by chance? I'm gonna try to put the wiring diagram up for you...I've got the same engine, just a 1975 one...image.jpg

You used an "outboard" ignition switch right?

If the black wire with yellow tracer is not sending the kill signal to the ignition system, it is possible the key switch is bad.

Thanks for the replies. It is a brand new key switch and yes it is a marine key switch. I will test the black and yellow wire and see what happens.

Re: Johnson 115 wont turn off with the ignition

I'm looking at my shop manual and there is not a black and yellow wire coming from the ignition. There is one running from the pulse pack to the coil and yoke assembly, and another running from the reverse shift solenoid??? Which one is it?

An outboard ignition switch has 6 terminals. The kill wire is black with yellow tracer and goes to terminal "m" on the switch.

Only three on this outboard. I found the problem was a wire crossed. Wasted my money on a new ignition.. Oh well Thanks guys

afraid not as all the ignitions i have seen have 5 or 6 wires. im not sure how you can stop a motor with out the extra terminals to stop it other than to pull the lanyard safety switch.

I'll go along with that as there are no black/yellow wires on this mtr. I've also experienced the bad blocking diode F_R is talking about. Diode is shorted out and the ign switch is still being fed. It's battery ignition, not cd ignition.

Well strictly speaking it is battery CD ignition. But not Mag CD ignition that everybody was thinking about.

Re: Johnson 115 wont turn off with the ignition

Thanks guys. I have been very frustrated. I started it in my garage and had to pull the spark plug wires to stop it. I hope I did't burn up the impeller
