motor won't turn over after installing outdrive

OK, I screwed this one up. Bought a wellcraft with a running 165 straight six w/bad outdrive. Got a used pre alpha outdrive and didn't take the time to match it up with the old one. Installed it on boat, went to start and motor wouldn't turn over. Pulled outdrive (VERY VERY hard, needed a come-along) and motor still won't spin. Turns out shaft on "new" outdrive is longer than the old.

Question is - What do you think I screwed up? and where to go from here

Ayuh,... How ya turnin' it,..?? Starter,..?? is the battery Dead,..??

Pull the sparkplugs, 'n turn it with a wrench on a pulley, 'n tight belts...

Yeh, all of the above. I tried starter then pulled plugs and used wrench on the pulley. I mean this motor ran an hour before the outdrive fiasco.

Ayuh,... Is the front pulley jammed up against the front motor mount,..??

Exactly how hard did this drive go on? you heard it run?

I did have it running. That was how I found out the outdrive as shot. The outdrive went on fine until the last 1/2-3/4" I made the mistake of drawing it tight using the bolts

I`d say you have the correct shaft ,if I remember right it`s a difference of a inch or slightly longer. Sounds like an alignment issue. If the starter making any kind of sound. soft click or hard crunch.,
