Hello; I am looking at a 70 hp Evinrude 3 cyl. say to run but "not in a couple years"
Probably needs carbd cleaned ect, no big deal. Is there anything else I should look for?
Is this an electric shift motor? I heard that could be bad?
Thx for any replies;
Randy

Compression and water in the lower unit oil check. Get it for REAL cheap if you can't sea trial it on a boat. If you can get it running on muffs, do a cyl power drop test- making sure all 3 cylinders are pulling there weight.

1972 was the last year of electric shift. If compression is good, everything else is fixable.

Good Luck with it! These engines seem to be held in high regard and I'm already finding out why!

I just picked-up a 1975 3cyl 70hp (in fact, I'm still on the road with it!)

the good news: Even compression on all 3 cyl...all within 1-2psi...pretty amazing considering the fact that that the water pump wasn't changed in 20 years! If that impeller is still intact when I drop the LU; it needs to be entered into some sort of Hall of Fame!

I don't know if water intrusion / seal issues are systematic (i couldn't get the unit to go above 8psi in a pressure test).

the only issue that I see on the powerhead so far is 3 cracked coils and 2 rusty head bolts.

Net: I'm in for the following: LU reseal kit, waterpump kit, 3 carb kits, fuel pump kit and 3 coils...and I'm still stoked about this engine!

Good compression is key. The coils are like $30 bucks each. I love my motor(see my sig)....it runs like a top, and sips gas.

I've got a 1988 70hp that came on a project boat. Right now the driveshaft is frozen into the crank and the exhaust housing is cracked from them trying to remove it which is the way I got and as soon as I can find a donor it will be getting repaired and hopefully used.
