Hi I am thinking about buying a 1992 Thompson 34' santa cruz, are these boats any good I read a boat report on the 27' santa cruz and the review was not good. This boat is the twin diesel turbo charged volvo engines with the volvo duo prop out drives. I heard the boats with diesels were built a little better because of the add weight of the diesels engines. My friend has a different boat but with the same engine and out drive package and loves them. I really like the open roomy layout of the boat and the 12' beam. any feed back would be much appreciated, especially any one who owns one or knows some that owns one. Thanks, Boatman1958

Hi, boatman- welcome to iboats.

It's impossible to say if that boat is any good. Pretty sure it was fine when it was built, but it's now 21 years old. No telling if the hull, transom and stringers are still structurally sound, or what kind of shape the diesels are in. Most of us here take the viewpoint that once a boat is as old as that one, the 'who made it' questions are irrelevant. It's all about its current condition.

Where will you use it, and for what purpose(s)? Does it have the amenities you want? Is the hull design suitable for the type of water you'll be in (ocean, bay, lake)?

Are you having the hull surveyed? Are you having a ceritfied diesel mechanic go through the mechanicals? That's what'll determine if the boat is 'good'.

All I can add to the thread is that back in the '60's they built one fine offshore lapstrake boat. I would have given my......eye tooth for one.

Found my boat after life time looking It was 1987 THOMPSON 30-40 HR. How it was stored and what your willing to put up with mechanicals and fitting your needs as boat is labor of love or pocketbook debits/depths compared to new prices .Time willing and time using are short compared to sleeping /working time to leisure .
