hello,
I bought a 04 15hp mercury 4 stroke in feb. The guy i bought it from bought a bigger motor for his bass boat. He started it when i went to look at it, so i know it runs. He gave me a mercury wire harness, but its for a 40hp merc.(harness #830201 1) not a 15hp. Im not even sure if it will even work. Not all the wire colors match from harness to motor. So i guess what i need to know is what color wire on harness plugs into what color on the motor.

starter side of motor. brown is the starter trigger wire. hot wire from battery goes to the first post on seleniod. ground goes to mounting bolt to start (correct)

this is the wire harness for the 40hp mercury. There is a wire that is light brown(almost pinkish) with a light blue line that was cut flush with outer coating. not sure if its needed or not. I hope that i provided enough info. i thought the pics would help out alot. any info would be greatly appreciated thanks

Re: ignition wires

thanks for the help...I finally got a chance to wire up the outboard...had to install a new switch as well...the wires out the back of the switch was just crumbling in my hand... all went pretty well had a few mind numbing moments...had to really think and study the schematics, but in the end it fired right up...runs great at idle, give alittle fuel and it wanted to stall. Left it warm up and i could nurse it to a higher idle but still hesitant when i gave it more fuel....think i need to do a carb clean up
