I need a recoil spring for my 5 hp sa model 497. the original is gone as in missing. needs to have a hook on each end and be around 5/16ths tall. could vary 1/32 either way maybe. and if I find something that will work, can they be shortened by cutting and heating end to bend in hook? as always any help is appreciated.

You might also try the outboard salvage yards listed in the FAQ.

Solved my spring problem, local hardware store gave me a used broken spring. heated with torch, bent the ends, and it fits and works good. Original rope was a coated cable so I am replacing with nylon rope, think it should work better. the scott guy said they didn't have nylon rope in those days..... not sure about that.
