My 1969 evinrude 9.5hp jumped out of forward gear twice the last time I was out in the boat.

How do I know what damage or wear I should look for if an attempt is made to repair the bottom end.

Should the gear set be replaced as a whole? Any special advice for someone who's inexperienced in this.

I want to see If I can keep it running for a couple more seasons.:joyous:

Re: jumping out of gear

Normally it's the forward gear and clutch dog. If you're going to do this work yourself get an OEM Factory Service Manual. Forget Seloc or Clymer as they Suck.

+1. Sounds like a worn clutch dog to me too. It's a fairly common problem and easy to fix. You simply replace the old clutch with a new one, but you will have to open the gear case to do so. Do a search here in the forums for lots of how-to threads. Check ebay and/or aomci.org for parts.
