Can I trim the tips of two of the points on the retainer nut to get the u joint out and if I can will it mess up anything?

Guess I'd need to see a picture of this one....
Are you referring to the castle-ated nut on the upper drive, in order to get the yoke shaft out? I would avoid that.... and get the right tool...IMHO, removing tabs off that nut may affect the quad ring in the bell housing (i.e. dimpling into the area of the missing tabs. (or may not).

Yeah it's the castle nut that holds the drive shaft in the out drive. My u joints are bad and I just don't have the cash to pay a shop to do it

I would still try and "borrow" the right tool.... just sayin. Good luck!
(I see where you are going with this now.....) I'll wait and see what the others think....

.....do it right before I screw something up...

Plus you need the tool to put the nut on and torque it down.

We're almost neighbors and I have the tool so if you pm me, we'll work it out.

Re: Alpha one u joint question

Done lots of uni joint replacements, and never had to remove the drive-shaft from the housing or trim anything. Just follow the manual (a proper one, not those seloc or clymer things!!) and you can't go wrong.

Chris.....
