My 85 50hp Johnson needs the trim cylinders rebuild. Has anyone accomplished this and did you use a spanner wrench?
If so where do you find 1?

Re: Trim/Tilt cylinder rebuild

armstrong adjustable spanner wrenches are the best multipurpose that can safely take off prestolite tilt caps. Lawnmower spanner wrenches tend to flex and wallow out the holes. They used to sell them at Sears. If not then try grainger, mcmaster, fastenal. The cap can get stuck by virtue of the rubber bonding into aluminum with age. If this is the case then don't overwork the wrench and wallow out pin holes. Heat the cap throroughly with propane and loosen while rubber is soft.
