About to make to the step and re-power a 1648 grizzly. It's got a 1999 50hp Johnson on it now, looking to go back with a 40hp 4 stoke.....

leaning towards Yamaha..

any ideas???

anyone have one of the theses with the nitro tilt assist on a boat?

No one is making a bad outboard these days. Go with whatever brand has the best local service department.

I did a lot of research before buying my Honda 40hp and as of 2008 or newer I'd have to give the nod to Honda. Quality is about the same but for more than one reason the honda is a better performing motor. The Yamaha is prettier though... You better go with Yamaha.

I don't know if a 40 4 stroke can match a 50 2 stroke.You may be disappointed.
There are direct injection 2 strokes that meet the CARB requirements.
The Evinrude Etec is one.It's 52.7 cu. in. compared the the 45 of the Yamaha.
And being a 2 stroke will out perform the Yammy just on the displacement alone.
They are a little heavier but can also be had on a 50 or 60. at the same weight.
No breakin period, no service for 3 years or 300 hours, fewer and less complicated service intervals.

Thanks for the input guys... but the shopping is over. Went with the Yamaha 40. I considered the Etec, but thinking long term..I had to go with the Yamaha. Didn't get the power trim, got the nitro tilt assist...., and about 1k difference in price. We'll see how it works.
Putting her in the water today, will keep you posted with the results.
