I have a 2004 Merc 40. I recently removed the remote steer and installed a tiller kit. I never ran it as a remote steer so I couldn't tell you how it preformed.
Well, I can't get the motor to idle correctly. It surges horribly. Idles way down and than almost dies than idles way back up. Sometimes gets stuck on high idle and just keeps extremely high idle, not tacking out but close. So let me tell you guys what I have done so far.
I rebuilt the carbs, I also removed the reed plate. There was a piece of rubber that had one of the reeds forced open. I was sure that was my problem but no such luck. I also removed the oil injection tank and pump. The motor has electric choke so it has a fuel enrichment solenoid. I thought maybee this was a problem. I removed the solenoid and plugged the lines off, no luck. Because you need this to choke the motor I re-installed it. I have adjusted the timing from one end to the next, no luck. So I acquired a wiring diagram and began that task. Everything seems to be in order there. Next to the spark plugs. Ok I pulled plug #3 no change, pluged it back in. Pulled plug #2 no change, pluged it back in. Pulled plug #1 motor dies. Changed plugs, same results. I'm definetely getting a spark from the plug wires. No matter what I do it keeps spitting, sputtering, and surging. I have ran it on the river @ W.O.T. and it surges there as well, it's not as bad W.O.T. as it is idling but still surging, pushes good wide open for 3-4 seconds then looses power for 3-4 seconds. I'm totally stumped here guys and would really appreciate any ideas or help. Thanks in advance.
