Re: Identify engine

It's a stringer.
I might suggest you find a boat with an engine and drive system that the company is still in business.
OMC Sterndrive went out of business in 1998.

Thanks for the reply it says on add 90hrs use and a spare drive so im thinking it would be good for many years to come. Was it a good reliable system? are spares still available?

Re: Identify engine

They weren't a bad drive, and parts are still available through the after market. The main draw back with them was that they can't be run with the drive tilted up at all. The ball gears will wear out in no time, even at idle. There life span is only about five years under normal use. Also the tilt motors were too weak for the job and give problems if the hole system isn't in good shape.

Especially if you are in the UK. You want something with parts and service more readily available.

Dreams shattered :( lol

There will always be another boat. Dont get hung up on one over another and definitely DO NOT buy this one. As an OMC stringer owner, you dont want to go down this road if you dont have to.

Don't get down. There are lots of used boats out there. Besides isn't it better to find out now than after you bought it? We see lots of people look at this type of power plant first and get bummed out when they find out what it is. Then they go on to find a great boat that much better fits their needs. You will too. :D

Re: Identify engine

Look for something with a Volvo or Mercruiser sterndrive.
Or an outboard.
Get a qualified mechanic to look at any marine purchase.
There are thousands and thousands of boats for sale and they all aren't as good as the owner states.
Once you buy it's YOUR PROBLEM!!!!
You need a compression/spark test and a drive check?
Test the hull and transom too.

Re: Identify engine

or better yet an outboard that can be more easily services in the UK like a Yamaha, or whatever the most popular OB brand is there.
Not buying an OMC stringer drive will be one of the best boating decisions you ever made to so be happy! and this is from an OMC owner of 11 years worth (Cobra but still can get most parts).
