I looking at some pictures of new thermostats and believe that the one I just pulled from my 1969 johnson is bad. It looks as if the "hood" should be seated on the head like thing. (sorry about the terms not sure how to best describe) I have attatched pictures of the one that came off of the 9.5 as well as a new one with the little hat on top seated.
