radar or no radar

i have a humminbird 858 hd di was thinking of getting the matching humminbird radar 2kw 12 in radome. anyone have one i do some back bay and tops 30 mile outside fishing havent had or used any type of radar. i can get the radome from humminbird for 1100.00 and its a 2kw any input? thanks

Use radar many times. For me...mostly for running at night or in fog. While offshore fishing, I use it to locate feeding birds, which means baitfish, which means larger fish. I use it, but I don't solely rely on it. Just another tool to make boating more fun and safer.

You really can't just buy one, read the manual, and get the full use out of radar. There are some good books, videos, and online sites that can train you in use. Maybe choose some study material and see if it will meet your needs.

The specifications on that unit are poor. What are you hoping to accomplish?

Basically just use for fog or crappy weather and limited visibility. Not looking to set world on fire or anything
